The North Korean Threat Pt3

I got an email from the Australian embassy in Seoul today.
As you would be aware there is much media speculation regarding the current situation on the Korean peninsula.  The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is keeping the travel advice for the ROK (link) under close review.
Australians are currently advised to ‘Exercise normal safety precautions’ in the ROK; this is the lowest of the four levels of advice.  Australians in the ROK are also advised to monitor developments closely because of the risk that tensions on the Korean Peninsula could escalate with little warning. This advice is based on the Department’s best assessment of the current security situation drawing on a range of sources of information, including the Embassy's ongoing close liaison with the ROK Government and representatives of other governments in Seoul.
North Korea just can't get a break. They have been beating their chest non stop for weeks now threatening to turn Seoul into a sea of fire and it isn't even enough for the Australian embassy to bump up their travel advice above their lowest level.

The North Korean Threat Pt2

BREAKING NEWS: South Korea are conscripting school students to build defensive rockets.

Obviously I am joking. I just found it rather amusing with all the North Korean chest beating at the moment that students at my school are building rockets in science class.

The North Korean Threat Pt1

I have had a few people contact me concerned about the tensions at the moment between North and South Korea. I don't believe they will attack.

  1. They can beat their chest all they want but at the end of the day they know they will get crushed if they do something stupid. China, Japan, South Korea and America would be pretty quick to take action should war break out.
  2. Every spring they send about a million soldiers to farms to help farmers plant crops so they have enough food to get through the winter. It is quickly warming in Korea and it is time to get those crops in the ground, not start a war.
  3. Every time there is a change in South Korean government or countries reduce foreign aid going to the North they beat their chest and talk of wiping out their enemies.

And even if they do attack.... They will attack Seoul, not Daejeon which is about 400km south of Seoul.

I spotted a good article which sums things up well
People who talk about an imminent possibility of war seldom pose this question: What would North Korea’s leadership get from unleashing a war that they are likely to lose in weeks, if not days? Even if they managed to strike Japan, the United States or South Korea with nuclear weapons — a big if, given that they do not have a reliable delivery system — they could not save themselves from ultimate defeat. On the contrary, the use of nuclear or other terror weapons would be certain to invite overwhelming retaliation, delivering North Korea’s decision makers to a fiery oblivion.

So in short... Don't worry.
